The Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute. Its highly anticipated red carpet often acts as a crossroad of arts, fashion, and entertainment. And, as we can see here, as a showplace for great watches. It also acts as the official opening of the institute’s latest exhibition, which also determines the theme of the evening. This year’s is entitled “Camp: Notes On Fashion.” According to Vogue (U.S. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is the event’s chairperson), 48 percent of the guest list was made up of actors – though I do not know whetherLady Gaga was classified as an actor or a musician. The co-host, however, changed her outfit four times before she even entered the gala, but not once among those four outfits did I spot a Tudor on the wrist of the brand’s official ambassador.
Tennis champion Serena Williams, another gala co-chair and an official Audemars Piguet brand ambassador, accessorized her yellow Versace creation with not only a fully diamond-encrusted automatic AP Royal Oak, but also a pair of highlighter-green Nike x Off-White Air Force One tennis shoes – tennis ball green, I would say. Her husband Alexis Ohanian also wore Audemars Piguet, but a brand-new Code 11:59 chronograph.
Rapper 21 Savage (pictured above) and Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. both opted to wear Richard Mille timepieces: Beckham’s is a fully diamond-set RM 030, while 21 Savage went all the way (go big or go home, I guess he thought) with a million-dollar limited edition RM 50-03 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph Ultralight McLaren F1. For me, this kid (he’s 26) with the unholy face tattoo won the night in terms of wristwear, though talk show host Jimmy Fallon, who posted a wristshot on his Instagram story showing him wearing a Lange 1 Moon Phase by A. Lange & Söhne in white gold, came in a close second. An unusual, but amazing choice proving great taste. And fitting in this anniversary year for the Lange 1.
Nick Jonas, attending with new wife Priyanka Chopra (see which watch he wore to his wedding here), wore a great deal of jewelry, including a diamond-encrusted Chopard Precious Lace necklace (wow, that looks great!) and ring from the same collection as well as a Chopard Imperiale watch set with 38.3 carats’ worth of diamonds. Oscar-winner Rami Malek was pretty true to Montblanc’s watches for a while (like the one he wore to the Bohemian Rhapsody premier back in October 2018), but seems to have switched to Cartier in 2019 as I spotted him wearing that brand’s watches at both the 2019 Golden Globes and Oscars. At the Met Gala, he was clearly sporting the Cartier Tank MC large in stainless steel, though.
Piaget ambassador Michael B. Jordan, the delicious bad guy in Black Panther, delighted photographers not only with his blingy Western-style tuxedo, but most importantly with his good-taste timepiece: the 38 mm (great size!) Piaget Altiplano 900D with baguette-cut diamonds. The Piaget ambassador further accessorized his look with a diamond-encrusted Piaget Possession ring.
Dwayne Wade, recently retired from the NBA, wore a modern yellow gold Rolex Submariner just barely visible underneath his blingy black cuff, while Justin Theroux preferred wearing a vintage (Ref. 1680) version of that watch. Liam Hemsworth, attending with wife Miley Cyrus, wore what appears to be a Rolex Reference 5513 Submariner. And Jamie Foxx also expressed his admiration for The Crown by sporting a yellow gold Day-Date.
Football great Tom Brady, who attended with supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen, wore an IWC Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Edition 150 Years, one of the watches of the Swiss manufacture’s 2018 Jubilee collecting celebrating – you guessed it – 150 years of the company (see another piece from the Jubilee…
