Toward the end of Andrew Yang’s editorial board interview with the Des Moines Register, the presidential candidate was asked why he didn’t wear an Apple watch — and why the watch he was wearing was stopped.
The founder of Venture for America and universal basic income advocate is typically known as being a tech guy. He even unveiled a campaign strategy of using a holographic version of himself to reach wider audiences as a way to be in multiple places at once.
“This is a Shinola watch,” Yang exclaimed. “It was made in Detroit. I’m friendly with the Shinola guys and gals.”
The watch itself needed its battery replaced, Yang said, after a Register staffer noted that the watch read about 12:10. (The interview took place at 3 p.m.) Yang said time stopped about a week ago for him.
“I have not had a chance to go replace the battery because I’ve been running for president,” Yang said. “I figured if I need the time, I can always take out my phone.”
Yang said the CEO of Shinola may attend the debates in Detroit later this month as his guest.
When asked why he still wears a “dead” watch, Yang said it’s a reminder to get the battery changed and also, a product placement.
“The least I can do is advertise for a good, American company,” Yang said. “It’s product placement for my friends at Shinola.”
Shinola’s best-selling watches cost between $550 to $1,500.
“They’re not as expensive as some of the other luxury watches,” Yang said.
